Determining The Bursting Strength of Corrugated fiberboard

Corrugated fiberboard is a robust board material that is made from fluted corrugated sheets and a heavy pulp base. These boards are made from flute lamination machines and are widely used to make strong corrugated boxes, used for packaging and shipping objectives.

A corrugated board is typically made of flutes or Kraft liners, 0.01 inch in size and 0.25 mm thick. These flutes are designed to give high strength to the corrugated board so that the resulting box is capable of supporting products during storage, shipping, handling, and transportation.

Specifically, the flutes demarcate the bursting strength of the corrugated board, often measured using a bursting strength tester. A flute with more diameter is considered inferior in strength as compared to one with less diameter. Also, the quality of a flute with more diameter is lesser than a flute with less diameter. In simple words, a fluting of less diameter is high in both strength and quality.

Steps to Measure the Bursting Strength of Corrugated Fiberboard

  • To begin the test, first prepare the sample to be tested. Make sure that the cut sample is larger than the size of the clamps so that the sample can be properly placed. This also confirms that the sample doesn’t slip from its place during the test.
  • Once, placed, clamp the specimen and tighten the clamps. After that, switch on the device and press the start button. 
  • The hydraulic pressure will begin to apply on the specimen until it bursts or ruptures. The rupturing of the sample will determine that it is the maximum force the sample can bear. 
  • As the sample bursts, the pressure will stop, and the load cell will record the bursting strength. The digital panel will then display the results.
